Free Healthcare for All

Al-Shifa Clinic was established in March 2000 in the low-income neighborhood of Muscoy in San Bernardino, California. It was founded by a small group of concerned Muslim community members. With the support of these community members, Al-Shifa Clinic was able to establish a permanent location for free services in October 2020.

Who We Are?

Mission: The mission of the clinic is to provide free, quality, patient-focused healthcare to all, irrespective of race, religion, ethnicity, or gender and regardless of ability to pay.
Vision: Al-Shifa Clinic envisions supporting and encouraging the health of all of humankind through free healthcare, and public health education services.
Goal: Al-Shifa Clinic is firmly anchored in the ethos of safety, quality care, service, dedication, patient satisfaction, responsibility, and community help. These characteristics compliment the clinic’s ultimate goal of improving the health status of the community it serves.

Impact

We have served over 30,000 unduplicated patients over 20 years. Al-Shifa Clinic has prevented several thousand emergency room visits for primary care concerns. We provide almost 5,000 free doctor’s visits annually. We have over 30 volunteer physicians of many different faiths and ethnicities. The Clinic provides multiple different specialty services including Cardiology, Orthopedics, Rheumatology, Pulmonology, & Nephrology. Al-Shifa Clinic provides over 1,000 low-cost dental visits annually.

Board of Directors

Chairperson
Dr. Talat Khan

Talat Khan, M.D., the Chairperson and founding member of Al-Shifa Clinic, is a physician and surgeon. She has conducted and facilitated many community health fairs. Dr. Khan has extensive knowledge and experience in mobilizing the community due to her involvement in providing necessary service to the indigent and under-served. She has been appointed to the Commission of Mental Health, San Bernardino County, 5th District.

Vice Chairman
Dr. Tariq Jamil

Tariq Jamil, M.D., is the Vice Chairman and board member of Al Shifa Clinic. He is a board certified pulmonologist working as an independent physician in private practice. His office is located in Medical Plaza at St. Bernardine Medical Center.​ Dr. Jamil sees patients at the St. Bernardine Medical Center and the Community Hospital of San Bernardino. He has privileges at LLUMC & Redlands Community Hospital. ​ Dr. Jamil also volunteers as a physician at Al Shifa Clinic. He won a humanitarian award from American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) in 2004 for his voluntary work as a physician at Al Shifa Clinic.

Medical Director
Dr. Muhammad Yaqub

Mohammed Yaqub, M.D., is a current board member and the Medical DIrector at Al-Shifa Clinic. He has been in practice as a Family Practitioner for the last twenty years. He has his own family practice in Fontana serving all ages. He also provides consultation for weight loss and nutrition programs and immunization for children. Dr. Yaqub has been involved in many community based organizations where he has volunteered much of his time and effort. Dr. Yaqub also leads yearly flu shot clinics at various community centers throughout the flu season.

Treasurer
Dr. Tamseela Awan

Dr. Tamseela Awan, M.D., is the Treasurer and a board member of Al-Shifa Clinic. She is a Board Certified Physician in internal medicine and has been working as a volunteer Physician with Al-Shifa Clinic since 2005. ​ She graduated in 1992, and completed her residency training at Interfaith Medical Center in New York. Currently, she is working as a Physician and Surgeon, Department of State Hospitals, California. Prior to that, she practiced medicine with a multi-specialty group in San Bernardino. Dr. Awan has also served as an Assistant Professor for Mid-Western University in Arizona for four years, teaching medical students rotating at Kingman Regional Medical Center in Arizona. She came to this field with a commitment to serve humanity with passion regardless of race, religion and socio-economic status. To fulfill that commitment, she joined Al-Shifa Clinic as a volunteer in 2005.

Dr. Hasan Syed

Dr. Hasan Syed, M.D., is a practicing surgeon in the Redlands/Loma Linda Area. He has been a volunteer physician with Al-Shifa Clinic since 2014. He envisions the clinic continuing to expand and provide critical outreach to the surrounding community, and has been an integral part of supporting this cause.

Dental Director
Dr. Makbul I Patel

Dr. Makbul I. Patel is the Dental Director of Al-Shifa Clinic. He has been a licensed practicing dentist in the Inland Empire since 1989. Dr. Patel resides in the city of Riverside, and is practicing in multiple locations in Riverside & San Bernardino County. He has served as chairman of the Islamic Center of Riverside and vice chairman of Al-Shifa Clinic Inc. Dr. Patel has been instrumental in establishing the dental department at Al-Shifa Clinic.

Secretary
Shakil Patel AIA

Shakil Patel, AIA, founding and current Board member of Al-Shifa Clinic. He was previously employed as a building and construction engineer with the County of San Bernardino. His knowledge and expertise is instrumental in the construction building plans of Al-Shifa Clinic. Currently, Mr. Patel runs his own architecture firm. ​

Board Member
Dr. Mohamed Ismail PhD

Dr. Mohamed Ismail, M.D., is dual board certified in preventive and internal medicine. He also holds an MPH in global health. Dr. Ismail is proficient in clinical preventive medicine and health education. He has authored multiple publications and abstracts relating to tobacco cessation, promoting optimal diets, and improving health care access to areas of physician shortage. Dr. Ismail has been instrumental in leading the implementation of telemedicine at Al-Shifa Clinic. He regularly makes time to provide care for the clinic’s patients amidst his busy full time job as a local physician. Dr. Ismail designed a physician group visit model for diabetes which helped to improve patient access to appointments.
